This week is all about Super Bowl commercials, and next in line is Audi. This past Sunday, Audi rolled out a beautifully made, 61 second long video that took a stand on Equal Pay.
“What do I tell my daughter?” the father says. “Do I tell her that her grandpa’s worth more than her grandma? That her dad is worth more than her mom? Do I tell her that despite her education, her drive, her skills, her intelligence, she will automatically be valued as less than every man she ever meets? Or maybe I’ll be able to tell her something different.”
The commercial received mixed reviews, some praising the commercial for supporting equal pay, like this tweet from Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer, and others saying that the ad is “unfair to men” and “stop trying to capitalize on political ignorance.”
This commercial aired at a very opportune time. A recent POLITICO article revealed that Senator Deb Fischer is working on two women’s rights related bills, addressing concerns like equal pay and paid maternity leave. The article quotes Fischer saying, “Everyone believes in equal pay for equal work. Everyone believes in that. That is current law. We want to see the current law upheld.”
